Terms of Service
Last updated July 7, 2026
These terms govern your use of ExemptGuard, a Shopify app by 8th Origin LLC ("we", "us"). By installing or using ExemptGuard, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not install the app.
The service
ExemptGuard collects, validates, stores, and tracks US sales-tax exemption and resale certificates for your store: buyers can submit certificates, uploaded documents are read and checked, expiring certificates trigger renewal requests, valid certificates can set a customer's tax-exempt status in Shopify, and your records export as an audit-ready register.
Not tax or legal advice
ExemptGuard is recordkeeping software, not a tax engine and not a tax advisor. It does not calculate, collect, or remit sales tax, and its validation checks are format and expiry checks — they do not guarantee that a certificate is legally sufficient in any jurisdiction. You remain responsible for your store's tax compliance, for reviewing each certificate before relying on it, and for decisions made during an audit. When in doubt, consult your tax professional.
Billing
Paid plans are billed through Shopify's billing system on a recurring monthly basis and appear on your Shopify invoice. Pricing is shown on our App Store listing and in the app before you subscribe. You can cancel at any time by uninstalling ExemptGuard; charges stop per Shopify's billing rules. We do not process cards directly and never see your payment details.
Acceptable use
You agree to use ExemptGuard only for your lawful Shopify business, to submit genuine certificates, and not to attempt to disrupt, reverse-engineer, or abuse the service. You are responsible for the accuracy of the certificate data you approve and for having the right to store the documents your buyers submit.
Your content
Certificates, files, and settings you or your buyers submit remain yours. You grant us permission to store and process them as needed to run the app — including the one-time automated field extraction described in our Privacy Policy.
Availability
We work to keep ExemptGuard running reliably but do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service. The app is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, 8th Origin LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages — including tax assessments, penalties, interest, or audit outcomes — arising from your use of ExemptGuard. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for the app in the three months before the claim.
Termination
You may stop using ExemptGuard at any time by uninstalling it. We may suspend or end access if these terms are violated. On uninstall, your data is deleted as described in our Privacy Policy — export your audit register first if you need to keep it.
Changes
We may update these terms; the date above reflects the latest version, and continued use after a change means you accept it.
